#IWSG: Should You Use #NaNoWriMo To Write Your Novel?

The question for this month’s #IWSG: should you use National Novel Writing Month to write your book?

My answer?

Why not?

I think NaNoWriMo is a great way to get that first draft written.  As part of this community, you know you’re NOT alone in pursuing a common goal: 50,000 words in 30 days.

50,000 words may not finish the book, but it’d make a darn good start.

This year, I’ve decided to write my NaNoWriMo book on Wattpad as an added incentive to complete the first draft especially since I’m terrible at finishing anything I start.

What about you?  Are you participating in NaNoWriMo?  Do you think it’s a good way to write a book?

  1. I am participating in NANOWRIMO for only the 2nd time. It is a great way to establish a writing habit. It is worth it to me to participate just for the community. As a writer, I do not have many people IRL around me that write. It is a specific type of conversation. I think it forces you to keep writing even if it is bad! It is the same concept of why I participate in STORYADAY where you write a short story a day for a month. It helps me finish too. It is useful to get a draft – or a start of a draft.

  2. Doing NaNoWriMo and also have a bit of problem finishing what I start. In fact, several of my stories on Wattpad I wrote during NaNoWriMo. Excluding this year and last year’s NaNoWriMo I actually have 4 NaNoWriMo stories uploaded on Wattpad & they’re all currently on hold. Hoping to get back to writing and editing them at a later date. Only one was for a different writing event, 85k90, and will be complete and ready for editing as soon as I finish writing the bonus story.

Anyways, I find NaNoWriMo as a great motivator as a great way to write, complete as much as you can, that first draft. Just try to remember it’s okay if the writing doesn’t live up to what’s inside my edit, since I’ll be editing later.
