#Writing Just For the Heck Of It

I’ve had a story idea knocking around in my head for a few years, and this past week I’ve decided to act strictly on impulse and just start writing about it.  Maybe I’m inspired because it’s October, and it’s Halloween season.  Who knows.  I’ve always been fascinated by the supernaturals including vampires and werewolves. For the past few years, I’ve watched movies like Daybreakers, The Twilight Saga, and the Underworld series as well as television series such as Teen Wolf (MTV’s version) and Van Helsing (SYFY’s version).

Now, by utilizing Wattpad, I’ve started my own version called, Bloodlust.

This will be a work-in-progress, and there will probably be at least two or three parts to the story broken up into novella-sized books.  If I can complete this story, and if the storyline is interesting and unique enough, I just might consider either self-pubbing it, or go the traditional route.

We’ll see.

I’ve put together a brief teaser trailer for the story:

#IWSG: What Are Your Thoughts On Social Online Publishing Platform?

Click on the image to access this group’s official page

The question of the month is: what are your thoughts on social online publishing platform?

Seriously.  What do you think about using sites like the ones above for publishing your stories (novels included)?

Good idea?  Bad?

I’ve used them periodically on and off for several years now. For me, they help me work on a book chapter by chapter while getting feedback.  Especially with sites like Wattpad or Writerscafe, I can find out if a particular storyline has true potential, or needs to go back to the “drawing board,” and for most of the ones I’ve done, scrapped altogether.

By posting/publishing stories/books on these places do they hurt your chances of finding a traditional publisher?

I don’t think so.

I used these sites to write my first draft.  And if I seriously want to find a traditional publisher for a particular story, I’d take it down before performing the heavy-duty editing/revising.

Heck, there’s been several writers on Wattpad who actually were approached by one of the big publishing houses to have their book published with them, and even a few had their stories optioned for television and big screen film.

It’s a new world out there (well, not truly “new” per say but the rules have changed). This is truly one of the best times to be a writer.

So, what about you? Any thoughts?  Have any personal experiences with any one of these sites?

#Poetry “Life: Just Tears In the Rain”

I’ve compiled many of my poetry that I’ve written over the years (several have been published) in one small book called Life: Just Tears In the Rain.  It’s on Wattpad currently; but in time, I hope to format it as an ebook and perhaps even print.

Here’s the Preface:

I didn’t start writing poetry until 2008. At thirty-seven years old, I felt like I lived separate lives and at this time, I didn’t recognized myself in the mirror.
Who was I? Really, who was that woman staring back at me?
I’d experienced so many different kinds of losses. Some in rapid, short successions.
A cousin, and best friend, died due to complications of Muscular Dystrophy. We weren’t fourteen yet.
The Retinitis Pigmentosa diagnosis at age 21.
The loss of my first husband in a car accident four years later.
In one year (2003), nearly lost my second husband to Pericarditis, had complications during the delivery of our son, and was laid off from work all within a five-month period. A short time later diagnosed with Post-Partum Depression.
A miscarriage in 2008 sent me spiraling downward to a very dark place.
Both the anxiety and depression came in to my life; plus I had a husband who suffered from PTSD due to traumatic military experiences.
I was on emotional overload. Something had to give but with trying to be there, emotionally, for my husband while taking care of our young son, I began to write haiku; and discovered a way to voice my pain and fears I hadn’t been able to do before.
Through writing poetry, healing slowly filled my life with light and joy I hadn’t experienced, not truly, until now.
“Medicines and surgery may cure, but only reading and writing poetry can heal.” – J. Arroyo, author

Sunday Story: The Vanishing

*Author’s Note: I wrote this short story over five years ago.  It’s dark.  It’s creepy.  It’s one of my secular, mainstream stories that I decided NOT to submit for publication now on Wattpad.

Story Blurb:

Leesa, a mother and wife, contemplates on the undesirable state of her life…but one should be careful, you might just get what you wished for in the most unexpected of ways.

Shadows wavered in the expansive backyard as the woman peered through the round window in front of her.  The reflection within the twilight didn’t reveal a happy face.  The skin under her brown eyes, fixed on the deck that spread beneath the small set of panes, sagged with a purplish hue.  Premature wrinkles lined her eyes and mouth.  No, she definitely wasn’t a happy person.  Her hands mindlessly moved each dish from the stainless steel sink, rinsed under cool water, and then carefully placed in the racks of the dishwasher.  She then reached for the knife and grabbed the wrong end.

“Damn it!”  She recoiled and placed the bleeding finger into her mouth.

Nope, it’s been the week from hell, and this was just another reminder that it hasn’t end yet.

Voices drifted into the room from a nearby television.

“Here are our top news of the hour.” A male news anchor said. “State and Federal law officials are investigating multiple cases involving children who have gone missing in the past three days. In every cases, each child reported to have disappeared sometime between bedtime and morning…”

“Frank.” She turned her head towards the living room. “Please turn it to something else.”

“Yes, dear.” A man’s voice said.

A click sounded and a commercial about a brand of soda came on.  She went back to rinsing a coffee mug with the uninjured hand when the floor board creaked.  She turned and smiled at her four-year old daughter who stood, wearing a pink nightgown, at the entrance of the kitchen.

Renee.  The small child was the only source of joy in her otherwise joyless life.

“What’s the matter, Renee? Did you have a bad dream?”

The girl shook her head, locks of blonde curls waved over her petite shoulders. “No, mummy.”

Mother picked up a towel to dry her hands. “What’s wrong then?

“There’s a boogeyman in my room.”

I have two other short stories also on Wattpad.  These two have been previously published.

His world was ending. How will he choose to go out? (Click on image to read the story)

Four college-aged people are dead on an island. The killer? Unknown, but definitely not human. Anna Mae Hart and her partner are called to help with the investigation and things get bloody from there. (Click on image for story)

Writing: A New Endeavor

There is a new serial fiction in town!

This idea pretty much tortured me for well over a year, and I figured the holiday season was a good time to start it.  It’s mainly a fantasy story, but it also has zombies, werewolves, elves, and other magical creatures.  And yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus but that particular aspect of the story will be unlike the one we now have in this world.
